Atlantic Boychoir
We extend big congratulations to Roghan Penney, one of our grade four learners who became a member of the internationally renowned Atlantic Boychoir last fall.  This choir is the first and only provincial choir of boys and young men in Canada.  Just before Christmas, Roghan, along with his choir mates, traveled to Europe and performed in Prague (Czech Museum of Music, Tabor, Budweis, Vienna (Votivskirche), Munich, and Nuremberg (Meistersingerhalle).  They recently culminated their tour with a performance with the King’s Singers at the Cathedral Basilica in St. John’s.

We are tremendously proud of Roghan for sharing his singing talents with this choir and with the world and we congratulate him and the choir on a successful tour.

Valentine’s Day
As we asked at Hallowe’en and Christmas, we kindly ask that you refrain from sending along cookies, cakes, or other treats on Valentine’s Day as it takes away from our normal classroom activities.  Valentines are perfectly acceptable.

While we cannot provide lists of names from each of our classes, we can happily provide a list of first names.

Head Lice
Yes, they’re back.  It seems that we are learning of Head Lice with greater frequency over the past couple of weeks.

For your information, if your child comes home with a letter about head lice  from his/her teacher, it means that there is a case in his/her class.  As such, this represents an alert for you to begin checking your child(ten)’s heads.

Treatments are available from various businesses in our area including Chatters Hair Salons and Breakwater Pharmacy.  These products include Ladibugs Hair Care and Tea Tree Oil.

For further information, please call the Public Health Nurse at 895-7054.  You may also point your web browser to: https://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/head_lice as it appears to be a great resource for parents and families.

School Closure
Please be reminded that we will be closed on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. Our full staff will be engaged in professional learning around LGBTQ awareness.

Please note that this was originally scheduled for Friday, February 9, 2018; however, it was rescheduled to Wednesday, February 7, 2018 due to circumstances beyond our control.

Spelling Bee
Our school Spelling Bee will take place on Friday, February 2, 2018 and there is plenty of excitement in the air about it.  Finalists in our school’s Bee will go on to The Telegram’s Spelling Bee where participants will spell for a spot at the national Scripp’s Spelling Bee.

Pink Shirts
All of our learners and staff will be provided with a pink shirt for free again this year, thanks to our corporate sponsor, Nalcor Energy.  Further details about our week long celebration of kindness will be announced in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!  These are to be worn on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, our school’s “Pink Shirt Day”.

KinderStart #1
Our first KinderStart session for this year is set for Friday, February 23, 2018. Consequently, there will be no school for our current kindergarten learners on this day.  In the event of an unplanned closure on this day (i.e., weather or power related), our session will be moved to the next available day that we are open and classes for kindergarten will be closed on that day also.

The other dates for KinderStart are as follows:  Friday, March 23, 2018; Friday, April 27, 2018; and, Friday, May 25, 2018.

If you know someone who will turn five years of age in 2018 in our school’s catchment area,  please remind them that they ought to be registered with us by now.  If they are not, please invite them to call the school and we’ll look after them.

Mid-Winter Break
Don’t forget our four-day long weekend coming up at the middle of February.  We will be closed on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2018.

Skating Sessions
Thank to the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, our learners will enjoy complimentary skating sessions at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay during the week of February 20-23, 2018.  The full schedule has already been e-mailed and posted to our school’s website, www.beachycove.ca.

Please note that we require a signed consent form (will be distributed on February 6, 2018) before our learners can participate; telephone permissions are no longer acceptable.
