School Leaving Assembly
Our assembly to celebrate our grade fours and their contributions to our school over the past five years is set for tomorrow, Friday, June 7, 2019 at 1:00pm.

Bussing
September coming will see us transition from using colours to numbers to identify our busses.  These numbers will correspond with route numbers assigned by the District.  For your information, here is a list of the current bus routes by colour and their corresponding number.

Green – Route 1
Red – Route 2
Black – Route 3
Silver – Route 4
Orange – Route 5
Blue – Route 6
Purple – Route 7
White – Route 8

There are no anticipated changes to our bus routes for 2019-2020; however, NLESD reserves the right to adjust routes at any time and parents are encouraged to check the bus routes regularly on nlesd.ca. Busses will stop at assigned stops only and students should be at their stops at the assigned times. If you have any questions or concerns about the assigned routes, please use the Avalon Public Inquiries Form found  here.

Forms for courtesy stops and seat requests will be included in the opening year package that your child receives on the first day of school and can also be found here.

Courtesy Stops– These are requests for a child to be picked up or dropped off at a stop that is not their home address but is on their assigned bus route. You must submit an application which will be distributed to your child on the first day of school.

Courtesy Seats – These are requests for a child to be picked up or dropped off at a stop that is not on their assigned route, essentially meaning that your child requires a seat on another bus. You must submit an application which will be distributed to your child on the first day of school.  Courtesy seating is assigned based on availability with youngest learners being awarded seats first.  As per district policy, courtesy seating will begin on September 30, 2019.  Courtesy seats will not be available before this time. We encourage our families to plan ahead for childcare for the first few weeks of school.

Family Responsibility Zone – Families within the 1.6km walk zone are eligible to apply for a courtesy seat. Courtesy seating is assigned based on availability with youngest learners being awarded seats first and will be from the identified stop within the FRZ.

National Safe Kids Week
We were thrilled to host the NL Safety Council’s (Safety NL) kick off for National Safe Kids Week here at our school this morning.  They drove home the message about the importance of everyone’s safety while outside playing over the summer and while riding bicycles.  Each classroom teacher was given a bicycle helmet to give away as a prize over the next day or so and during the assembly we drew a name to receive a brand new bicycle.  We extend our congratulations to one of our little grade one learners, Desmond, in Ms. Greene’s class, on winning the bicycle.

Kindergarten Celebration Assembly
Our celebration assembly for our learners in kindergarten is set for Monday, June 17, 2019 at 1:00pm.

Please remember that our doors will open at 12:30pm for this event; we do not have space in our classrooms or corridors to accommodate all of our guests before door opening time.  We thank you in advance for respecting this expectation.

Field Trips
Many field trips are happening at this time of the year.  Please ensure that your permission slips and fees are sent along in a timely fashion.  Learners who do not have their permission slips passed in cannot participate in the field trip; we are not permitted to accept verbal permission over the telephone.

Cafeteria Service
Please be advised that our cafeteria operations will close at the end of lunch on Tuesday, June 25, 2019; families are responsible for providing lunches and snacks for Wednesday and Thursday.

School Closure
Please be reminded that we will be closed on Friday, June 14, 2019 to allow teachers time to prepare progress reports for term III.  In 2019-2020, these five hours will be spread over terms I and II (2.5 hours each) and will be coupled with PD for the remainder of each day.  Further details will be provided in the fall.

Last Day
The last day of school for our learners is Thursday, June 27, 2019.  School will close at 12:30pm at which point term III progress reports will be distributed.  Please note that we are not permitted to release reports prior to this date/time; if your child cannot be with us on this day, we will mail the progress report via Canada Post to your home address.

As always, please get in touch with any questions you may have.
