Happy Friday!

Collection of Eye Glasses
We are working in partnership with the PCSP Lions Club and Team Broken Earth to collect used eye glasses and sunglasses between now and March 29, 2019.  If you have any at home that you are ready to part with, please send them along to school.  The class that collects the most pairs will win a pizza party from the Lions Club.  All of these eyeglasses will be cleaned up to like new condition and will go on to change the lives of those who cannot afford regular eye care.

Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Club
The Kids Eat Smart foundation, the umbrella organization that coordinates breakfast clubs across the province, is promoting a province wide breakfast program blitz in an effort to raise funds to sustain the program in schools all across Newfoundland and Labrador.  Rather than asking for specific items for the club, we have decided to promote online donations through the Kids Eat Smart website, www.kidseatsmart.ca.  If you are in a position to donate funds, please ensure that you select our school from the dropdown list of schools.  This will ensure that 100% of the funds donated by Beachy Cove families come back to our breakfast club.  As you can appreciate, sustaining a breakfast program for a school our size requires a lot of money despite the incredible efforts by our volunteers to keep costs at a minimum.  We thank you in advance for any contribution you might make.

Kindness Week/Education Week
We have designated the week of February 25-March 1, 2019 as Kindness/Education Week at Beachy Cove Elementary School.  The theme for Kindness Week/Pink Shirt Day is “Be Someone’s Hero – We’ve Got Your Back” and the theme for Education Week is “Go the Extra Mile”.

We will introduce these themes to our learners on Monday where teachers will discuss with their classes the reasons why Pink Shirt Day came into existence.  They will ease their classes into thinking and talking about how they can be heroes to others.  Our School Spirit Team will also introduce a scavenger hunt for the week.

On Tuesday, links will be provided for stories and videos which are focused on heroes and our learners will complete an activity in which they identify a real life hero in their lives.

Wednesday is a big day for us at Beachy Cove as we celebrate Pounce’s first birthday (in case you were not aware, Pounce is our school mascot) and he’s been with us now for one full year.  Our KES Breakfast Club will be providing a hot breakfast consisting of pancakes and sausages and from there we will move to the gym for our birthday party/Pink Shirt Day assembly (pink shirts will be distributed to our learners first thing Wednesday morning prior to the assembly).  Our Teacher-Librarian  will read a story to the assembly that focuses on kindness and everyone will be provided with a tattoo to celebrate Pounce’s big day.  And, we will be emphasizing respect across four dimensions of respect for self, others, learning, and the environment and we’ll enjoy some of Pounce’s birthday cup “cake”.

Thursday is “Spotlight on Cool” day where our learners are invited to bring along a flashlight from home that they will use in reading stories about role models, heroes, and kindness.

Friday is #notallsuperheroeswearcapes day and our learners are invited to dress or come to school as their particular heroes.  This need not be an elaborate costume or involve any inordinate amount of work for our families.  It may be represented with simply a shirt, hat, jacket or some other artifact or item which represents their heroes.

Please engage in conversation with your children throughout the course of the week so that you can reinforce our positive messages of being kind to one another in order to improve the world and society in which we live.

2018-2019 Yearbooks
In an effort to encourage online ordering for our yearbook we are not sending home flyers this year; however, if you would prefer to pay by cheque or cash, simply ask your child’s teacher for a paper copy of the order form and return it to school as per usual.

The online process is simple and the cost for a yearbook is $20.  The order site is ybpay.lifetouch.ca and our school Yearbook ID Code is: 11980219.  Deadline for orders is March 22, 2019.

School Development Surveys
It’s time for our annual school development surveys.  Each year, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, administers surveys to learners, teachers, support staff, and families.  The results of these surveys factor into our annual school development process (strategic planning).  Surveys for our staff and learners take place at the school; however, our families are encouraged to click here to provide input.  If you have more than one child at the school, you are encouraged to complete the survey with your oldest learner (at BCE) in mind.  And, as always, please let us know if you have any questions.
