School Closure
As per an e-mail sent out last week, please be reminded that we are closed this coming Friday, May 17, 2019 for teacher professional development.  We are also closed on Monday, May 20, 2019 in observance of Victoria Day.

Municipal Awareness Day
We proudly acknowledge our tremendous partnership with the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s again this year as they hosted our grade four learners at their annual Municipal Awareness Day.  Megan Au, one of our grade four learners summed up the experience in the following piece that she submitted to me via e-mail this morning.

“Tuesday May 14, all the grade 4s of Beachy Cove Elementary, went to the town hall for a field trip. They went to 4 stations, they were, the councillor chambers, the fire station, the pcsp library, and the trucks.

Four people of each grade 4 class were elected in their own real election to be jr. Councillors. One was elected jr. Mayor, that was Simon Jennings, the others were councillors, Megan Au, Lauryn Eddie and Hunter Churchill. The town also provided snack and lunch for everyone.

In the Library they were taught that the library was built to help the environment.
At the Councillor chambers they learned about what the town council does to help the town. At the fire station they learned about the vehicles and equipment they use. At the truck station they learned about each truck and what it does. Thanks to the town for the amazing day!”

Election Day
As you know, tomorrow, May 16, 2019 is election day here in Newfoundland & Labrador. We are always on the lookout for learning opportunities here at Beachy Cove and we recognize the potential for learning by taking your young children with you to the polling station as you vote tomorrow.  Take them along and discuss with them the importance of exercising this right that we often take for granted.  We need to do all we can to promote the positive aspects of the democracy in which we live and demonstrating the importance of participation in elections will go a long way in preparing our young learners for the future.

National Safe Kids Week
Safety NL will proclaim National Safe Kids Week here at an assembly here at Beachy Cove on Thursday, June 6, 2019.  We thank Safety NL for selecting our school as the site for the kick-off event.  It is a terrific time of year to share safety messages as we meander into our summer vacation.

School Leaving
Our school leaving assembly for our grade four learners is scheduled for Friday, June 7, 2019 at 1:00pm.  We are not encouraging any extra expenses for our families for this event.  While it is a milestone assembly for our grade four learners and their families, there is no need to purchase new clothes for this event; clothing that would be normally worn to school on any given Friday is perfect acceptable.

Retirement
We extend our thanks and appreciation to Carla Porter who has decided to retire from the teaching profession at the end of this school year.  Mrs. Porter has taught here at Beachy Cove for many years in our elementary division and we thank her for her many contributions to our learning community.  If you would like to send her your best wishes, please do so by clicking here.

Kindergarten Celebration
Our year-end celebration for our Kindergarten learners is set for Monday, June 17, 2019 at 1:00pm.  Please be on the lookout for further details from our Kindergarten team in the weeks ahead.
